I hate to admit this, but I as I am a glutton for punishment, I will.

But I like Randy Travis. I was driving home from a Body Shop party last night and happened to flip to the local country music station. I'm not a die-hard fan of country music, but I can appreciate some of it from time to time.

Anyway, right after I turned it on, a Randy Travis song came on. And not just any song, but the one that he's most famous for, "Forever and Ever, Amen." I won't even bother quoting it, because I'm sure that most of you are quite familiar with it.

What's the big deal, you ask yourself. Well, the thing is, I never thought I'd actually admit to liking this song. You see, when I was a kid, my family went on a lot of road trips. I'm talking trips from Michigan to Florida and back a few times a year. And that being the 80's, cd's were just catching on. (I can still remember one of the 1st cd's my dad bought. The "Back to the Future" soundtrack. Oh yeah, some good stuff on there. Hughy Lewis, etc. We probably listened to that one, oh, a hundred times or more on each trip.)

Anyway, one of my dad's favorite past-times while we were driving in the car was to pick a cd that he knew we, the children, wouldn't like and play it loudly. I'm sure he liked Randy Travis, but I think he relished the fact that as soon as the above mentioned song would come on, I would roll my eyes, pull out my Walkman, and try to drown out what I considered to be the most annoying song at the time. It didn't work. No matter how much I turned up my own music, I could still here that darn song.

Now this whole thing became the family joke on every trip. And my sisters joined in the fun, deciding it would be more fun to annoy me than to be annoyed themselves. They claimed to love this song, but I think they secretely were just trying to bug me. And after they read this post, I can guarantee one thing. They will both make fun of me now that I DO like the song and claim that I'm a dork, or something like that and act like they never liked the song in the first place. That's just how sisters can be.

So, Julie, Michelle, go ahead and leave a comment. Just remember that you were the ones who sang along at the top of your lungs, just like I did on the way home last night. I know the truth, and I'm sure I can get someone to back me up on this one!

And yes, I did turn up the volume. I sang, and didn't care who saw me. At least it was dark, I had that going for me. And surprisingly, I knew all the words. I must have actually been listening all those times as a kid. You win, Dad. I actually like the song.

I used to hold interpretive dance parties to the soundtrack of "Back to the Future" in the basement of the old Iron Dr. house. I LOVED that cd.

I really need to get the Back to the Future cd. And the Randy Travis one wouldn't hurt either. Julie, were you dancing by yourself, or were others involved?

LOL Funny how things from our youth become comforting and special as we get a little more mature :)

Hey! At least there was music! When we went on road trips we got news radio or just my parents bickering! lol

My mom used to sing opera songs during car trips (she sang in the local choral group). I hated it.

Today, I find myself always playing the Phantom of the Opera while I drive with my 3-year old and 1-year old.

i confess that i am the proud owner of the aforementioned CD...i lifted it from dad...i, too, am surprisingly drawn to randy's lilting vocals and heart-wrenching lyrics; in fact, just a couple days ago ian was looking through my CD collection and commented on how he had never heard that CD played before...i guess i'll have to enlighten him one of these days!
